The History of Our Village
Until 1926, the village was called Arpitsa. This name, according to
tradition, was taken from an Arab woman (Arabia) who had came to convert
the Christians to Muslims. The change in belief of the Tsamides in Perdika
began to increase during the time of Ali Pasha. From 1737 the Ecumenical
Patriarchy takes active measures for the preservation of Christianity and
Hellenism in Epiros, sending Father Kosmas during the 18th Century. In
1926 the village was renamed Perdika due to the shape of the village,
which at that time had the shape of a flying grouse, and because the area
had lots of grouse game. It is made up of the settlements of Perdika and
Arilla. Arilla, during Roman times was the estate of the Roman soldier
Arillas, from whom it took its name. Before 1944, it was the largest
village in Thesprotia and it is still the largest village. The whole area
of the community (agricultural and non-agricultural) surmounts to 35000
acres.
Perdika is located between Igoumenitsa and Parga. Current residents,
who are over 2000, from a mosaic made up of residents from various
countries, which set up their homes after the withdrawal of the Albanian
Tsamides. Apart from the heterogeneous nature and the mosaic that the
composition of the residents presents, the people of Perdika are
outstanding for their calming and progressive emotions. From olden times
there was a lack of infrastructure and development. Except for the houses,
nothing else existed. The first concern of the people of Perdika work of
residents and with voluntary contributions, they redesigned the central
square, the centre of which housed a mosque with a minaret, which was
destroyed. They opened the road from Perdika to Karteri (Length 12km)
which connects us to the headquarters of the county. The opened
agricultural and internal roads.
In Perdika there is the Cathedral of St George, The churches of St
John, St Sotiris, St Nicholas, St Michael and in Arilla The Church of the
birth of the Virgin Mary, primary school, secondary school, nursery school,
a two community building and a police station. On the ground floor of the
community building you can find the post office. Also there is a fully
equipped community surgery and ambulance, and agricultural co-operation,
parent and guardian association, industries, manufacturers and shops.
There ar a lot of summer resorts rented rooms and several hotels on the
beautiful virgin beaches, such as Karavostasi, Arilla, St Paraskevi and a
campsite on the Sofas beach. For the tourists, though, who may prefer the
quiet and deserted beaches there are Stavrolimena, Prapamali, Skaloma and
Mega Drafi, Angali and many others.
